Tools for the Job Part 1

I got my new machine (Singer Stylist 7258) that included the feet I wanted, primarily a buttonhole foot, and I got to prepping. By this point in the game, I’d purchased several patterns.

I was dead set that I was going to make Simplicity pattern 8084. However, I knew I needed some one on one help and I also knew that this was going to be a test run. I found a local sewist that was offering 1 1/2 hour lessons for $20 a lesson. It took us about 4 weeks to get through the dress.

Throughout the 4 weeks, I was becoming more and more frustrated with the machine. It didn’t matter if it was during my lesson or at home working alone. Things just weren’t going well. In addition to the “muslin”, I was also duplicating what we’d covered in class with the fabric I really wanted to use (white chambray).

There were other items I was attempting to sew while working on this dress. So, when I say things, I really mean things were not going right. I couldn’t cut out patterns and fabric accurately. The sewing machine was having a fit. The stitch quality was bad, back stitching was a clumped up mess on the bottom, needle threader was hit or miss. You name it and I was beyond frustrated with it. Oh and seam finishing. Again, a story for another day.

During this 4 week ordeal, I went to my husband and said it is either me or the machine that is the problem. This time around, I honestly don’t think it’s me. He encouraged me to find another machine. Oh….That I did.

It’s amazing how a Bernina dealer, Fashion Fabrics of Mt. Pleasant, and a rotary cutter kept me motivated to continue this journey.

I am now the proud owner of a Bernina560.

Until next time and Happy Sewing!
