My Pants Making Journey Begins

Pants, Pants, Pants!

Ill fitting store bought pants is what drove me to learn how to sew. Now, whenI say ill fitting, I mean that I would spend $30-50 on a pair of slacks and still have to go and pay more to have the waist taken in and the hemmed. The hem would be at least 3″-5″ taken off. I was beyond fed up with this. Mind you, this has been a problem for as long as I can remember (trust that’s a long time).
October 2018, I’d come to the conclusion that I’d had enough experience under my belt to finally make my pants. I did feel like I could not do a zippered fly on my own and manage the fitting. So, I sought out some help from a local shop. We worked on what I now deem a muslin of Simplicity 8056.
The cut size was too big. So big that I didn’t even want to mess with deconstructing it. So bad, that I did deconstruct it and said forget re-cutting and putting it back together. Fabric was $5. Not mad at all. It’s time to move on. I’d learned what I needed to and was confident enough to install a zipper fly. I went home pulled out my pattern, fabric and got to cutting.
I decided on a Closet Case Pattern.
Pattern: Sasha Trousers
Pattern Size: 0-20
View: A
Fabric: Stretch Corduroy
Cut Size: 18
Modifications: Added darts to the waistband (see why below)
Likes: The Fit
Dislikes: None
Conclusion:
Would I make this again? Yes, I have plenty of fabric for making lot of pants for this coming fall and winter.
Below are some photos of the construction process.
I wasn’t nervous about the zipper installation, but I was about the welt pockets. The sample pants didn’t have them. I went for it full throttle. Remember, when I said bag making has helped me tremendously with garment making. Who knew a welt pocket was the same concept as a zipper handbag pocket? Without the zipper! Nailed it.
