Making handbags continues to improve my sewing skills.
I sort of put garments partially on the back burner. I didn’t completely give up on sewing garments, but I pressed on hard with bag making.
As my love for bag making continued to grow, I began looking for bag patterns. I started with a few from the Big Four (Simplicity, McCalls, Butterick). They weren’t to my liking and the pickings were slim. I started to come across a few independent pattern designers that were more my speed.
Here is a glimpse of the many bags I continued to make. I made everything from basic totes, to zippered handbags (with multiple pockets), clutches and small cosmetic bags.
Again, bag making helped me better understand garment sewing. Sometimes it helps when you are learning from something you’ve admired for years. A few of my skills that improved from bag making are zipper installation and creating welt pockets.
